This study aimed at exploring the types of drug information enquiries received from physicians in Bachmai hospital as well as at determining their needs and wishes concerning drug information activities through drug information unit (DIU) database retrieval and direct interviews with questionnaires. A total of 381 encounters were received during a 10-month period for whole hospital. The number of questions per month depended not only on each department but mostly on clinical pharmacy activities. Questions were mainly concerned with dose adjustment, administration/dosage, drug evaluation/drug selection, adverse drug reactions, and drug interactions. Sufficient answering could not be given for more than 20% of received questions from 6 frequently used drug information references available in the DIU. All participated physicians recognized a DIU necessary for consulting drug-related questions with head-to-head answer, telephone and email were preferable. These results may help determine strategies to strengthern drug information activities in hospitals.
